Why Are More States Legalizing Gambling in the U.S.?

But don't look for Utah and Hawaii to step into the legalized gambling arena.

The ever increasing amount of legal online casinos in the USA is because more state governments are seeing the light when it comes to the legalization of gambling as a form of recreation — and the staggering amount of money flowing into its coffers.

In the United States, the federal government is not allowed to impose any restrictions or regulations surrounding the world of gambling. As such, it’s the individual states who take it upon themselves to draft and implement legislation that relates to gambling.

In the past, it was only Nevada and New Jersey that were adamant about providing accessible gambling services to the public. This encompassed gambling activities that took place both online and offline. Eventually, in vast coordination with tribal governments around the country, many states have sought to legalize online gambling in the form of casino games in both digital and brick-and-mortar platforms for their citizens. Only two states in the United States don’t allow for any kind of organized gambling operation: Hawaii and Utah.

But even though many states are now looking to legalize gambling in their own specific districts, there is still a vast struggle for the legalization of sports betting. Earlier, we talked about how 48 of the 50 states now legalize gambling in some shape or form. And even though it’s been more than three years since the Supreme Court struck down the federal prohibition of sports betting, there are only 21 states that have legalized sports betting and are now offering full online services. There are 11 states on top of that that offer sports betting via retail centers. However, there are also currently two states, Wisconsin and Nebraska that have pending legislation that is designed to allow for online sports betting activities.

The Progress of Legal Sports Betting

What’s the deal? Why are sports betting so hotly contested in various states? Almost every state legislature has at least considered the idea of legalizing sports betting. However, their reality of the situation is that full online sports betting is not going to be readily available in many states because of deep-seated political opposition. Aside from that, there are various complex relationships between state governments and tribal governments who are at odds with one another regarding this specific issue. Unfortunately for state agenda pushers, tribal governments need to sign off on any sports betting-related legislation before it can be passed and implemented.

However, in 2022, it looks like states like Georgia, Kentucky, Vermont, Kansan, Missouri, and Maine will be looking to legalize sports betting in some shape or form. Florida state government is also aggressively pushing for the legalization of sports betting but are stuck in a legal limbo.

The Benefits of Legalizing Gambling

The reason why more states are now pushing for the legalization of gambling in all forms is that they stand to benefit from the economic push that this beloved form of recreation can provide. There’s no denying the sheer popularity of gambling as a form of recreation among consumers. First of all, the tax revenues from gambling have already been proven to be formidable in the states that legalize gambling in all forms. This is a trend that is consistent even in other countries in all parts of the world. The legalization of gambling has granted governments the mandate to earn tax revenues from casino operators and patrons alike. These tax revenues can be used to provide additional funding to government projects and initiatives.

Aside from that, the gambling industry has managed to grant more employment opportunities to the job markets of the United States. While casinos are typically run by entrepreneurs who operate within a standard corporate structure. There is a myriad of jobs that go into the running of a casino. Many people are managing to find work as dealers, security guards, floor managers, chefs, and servers throughout many casinos in the United States.

Looking Forward

As far as the future of legalization of gambling in the United States is concerned, it doesn’t look like the states of Hawaii and Utah are going to budge any time soon. And there’s still much progress to be made with regards to sports betting in various states. But for the most part, it looks like trends are pointing towards further liberalization of gambling in the United States.
