why sunscreen is so important

Why Is Sunscreen So Important?

Three reasons: aging, skin cancer and to set a good example for your children.

From a very young age, we know it’s important to wear sunscreen on a hot day to prevent our skin from burning. Yet this is not the only reason to wear sunscreen, and hot days aren’t the only time to ensure our skin is protected.

If you only currently use sunscreen when you’re on vacation somewhere hot or when you want to prevent the risk of sunburn (which, of course, is extremely painful), then it is crucial to know why else sunscreen is important and why it really should be worn every day. The sun never stops shining, and it is always a threat, no matter how much we might enjoy being in its presence. Read on to find out why sunscreen should be worn daily.

Reduce The Signs Of Aging

The skin is the largest organ on your body, and therefore, if it is damaged in any way, it is going to be obvious for anyone who sees you. This doesn’t just mean sunburn and similar injuries; it means aging too.

When you fail to use sunscreen, and you go out in the sun, the collagen in your skin (the substance connecting your skin cells together) will be damaged, and over time this means that the elasticity of your skin is reduced, which causes wrinkles. In order to stay looking youthful, a good sunscreen with a high enough SPF is crucial.

Don’t forget that your eyes can also be damaged by the sun and can look older too – as well as having your vision impaired – so wearing UV protection contact lenses is a good idea to keep your whole body safe.

Reduce The Risk Of Skin Cancer

Any form of cancer is going to have a devastating effect on the sufferer, and although there are many treatments and it may not result in death, it will still cause a lot of unpleasant pain and general problems. Those treatments are not easy to deal with either.

To prevent having to go through this, the ideal solution is to wear sunscreen of at least SPF 15, although the higher the SPF the better, as it offers more protection. Or rather, it offers the same amount of protection but for a longer period of time.

Remember that if you are out in the sun for an extended period of time, you should reapply the sunscreen to ensure continued protection. This is especially important if you have been swimming or produce a lot of sweat.

Set A Good Example

The ozone layer is depleting, and that means more harmful UV rays from the sun can make it down to earth. In turn, this means that there is more chance of the skin being damaged or of people developing skin cancer. It’s crucial that everyone understands this and wears sunscreen every day, no matter whether the sun is hot or not.

If you do this, you can set a good example for your children, ensuring that they continue to wear sunscreen every day as they get older, and generations to come will do it as a matter of course, just like brushing their hair and cleaning their teeth.
