The Magic of Sunscreen

The Magic of Sunscreen

And Why Everyone Needs It.

Now that summer is here, you are sure to be stocking up on sunscreen. If you are not, you are leaving your skin vulnerable to the sun’s harmful rays. Sunscreen should be your magical protector. Here is a look at why everyone needs it.

Skin Conditions Sunscreen Can Help to Prevent

Sunlight is essential for our physical and mental health. In addition to providing our bodies with vitamin D, the sun plays a vital role in regulating our sleep patterns. It can boost our moods too. However, there is another side, as you probably know.

UVA and UVB rays can be harmful. Too much sun exposure can also cause premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and dryness of the skin. Too much sun can even cause skin cancer. So, it is not only sunburn that sunscreen can protect us against. It also keeps us safe from more serious potential conditions. If you do end up with a condition like hyperpigmentation, there is at least treatment available. It is recommended that you get a free consultation with a dermatologist from Nava MD so that a specific customized treatment plan can be formulated for your exact skin type and condition. But you can help to prevent the need for treatment by regularly using sunscreen.

Furthermore, you should not only use sunscreen in the summer. UVA and UVB rays still affect your skin even on cloudy days, so make sunscreen a regular part of your skincare routine.

You Can Find a Sunscreen for Your Specific Skin Type

These days, leading brand sunscreens are formulated especially for different skin types. So, everyone should be able to find a sunscreen that suits their specific skin. For instance, you will find sunscreen for normal skin, sensitive skin, oily skin, and acne-prone skin.

Know Which SPF to Go With

The Sun Protection Factor, more commonly known as SPF, is a number that indicates the level of protection the sunscreen provides against harmful UVB rays. You should opt for an SPF of at least thirty but preferably more. If you are in the sun a lot, go with an SPF of fifty or higher.

Everyone Needs to Use Sunscreen

People who do not burn in the sun sometimes think it is not necessary to apply sunscreen. Well, as mentioned above, sunscreen does much more than protect you against burning. So, even if you do not burn, you need to wear sunscreen.

There is a common myth that people with darker complexions do not need to use sunscreen. Indeed, the myth must have gained traction because people with darker skin tones are less likely to use sunscreen compared to people with lighter tones. While it is true that people with darker complexions are less likely to get skin cancer than people with lighter complexions, the former still can get skin cancer, and there are many other conditions people with darker skin tones can get when they are exposed too much to sunlight and do not use sunscreen as a preventative measure.

Another group of people who mistakenly think they do not need to wear sunscreen are those who spend a lot of time indoors. In fact, most people believe they only need to apply sunscreen to their skin when they are outdoors. But actually, UVA rays can penetrate through windows and cause just as much harm as if you were outside. So, it is recommended that everyone applies sunscreen daily, regardless of weather conditions, skin type, and whereabouts.
