Del Mar Entrepreneur Hits His Stride After Moving to Chateau La Jolla

Beset by a back injury, Peter J. Burns III knew he had to do something. To get to the front door of his cottage in Del Mar, California, the 66-year-old serial entrepreneur had to descend stairs. That was a daunting proposition when you have debilitating sciatica. Furthermore, fixing his own meals was a challenge since it required him to go to the grocery store and then prepare the food.

If he could only rest his back, the doctors told him, it would speed his recovery. The solution is Chateau La Jolla, an independent senior community where Burns could focus his businesses while resting his body.

“From the moment I toured Chateau La Jolla, I knew it was for me,” he says. “The facility is impeccably designed, family-owned, and structurally sound. I have just as much privacy as I had when I lived in the cottage. They have had an incredible executive chef for 10-plus years who was also the executive chef and co-owner of Trattoria Aqua in the village of La Jolla. I have never eaten better in my life.”

The facility has annual leases and is just a half-block from the ocean. Management touts the healing properties of the salt air and the amazing weather. “I hope to resume my walks on the beach soon when my back is better,” he says.

“The facility’s incredible team of professionals has taken all the pressure off of me and allowed me to heal,” says Burns, a regular columnist for Entrepreneur Magazine. “It’s the perfect environment for my business, Burns Funding, and my other entrepreneurial activities.”

Since moving to Chateau, Burns’ funding business has increased. “Life is easier here,” he said. “So is doing business. I entered the Chateau with the idea that maybe I would be here for a year, and then once my back was better, I would get another cottage. However, thus far, my experience suggests that maybe I’ll stay here longer.

This has been a life-changing experience, and I am not going to give this up anytime soon. You don’t have to be 70 years old to live here. In fact, it’s the perfect environment for those men and women who are 55 and older and want to keep their hand in business activities while enjoying a life of luxury.”
