Learn how and why online casino regulations differ across the globe

Differences in regulations means that while people in some areas have access to web-based gambling sites while others are dissuaded or outright banned.

The online casino industry has gone from strength to strength in recent years and there is clearly a lot of enthusiasm for this type of service amongst consumers in many parts of the world.

However, differences in regulations from region to region mean that while people in some areas are able to enjoy access to web-based gambling sites with the full support of the authorities and the protections that come with this, others are either dissuaded or outright banned from play of any kind.

In addition, many operators, such as Kazoom Casino, only allow access to player’s from certain countries. This is because an operator’s ability to offer casino games is dependent on having a specific licence in the country or region of said player.

Here is a look at how these differences stack up and why they exist.

Varied approaches

Although each country has its own unique take on online gambling regulation, there are three main categories into which these approaches can generally be grouped.

First, in the case of countries like the UK, a very liberal attitude to digital casino services can be taken, meaning that operators are free to set up fully licensed sites which are overseen by a central regulatory body and are available to any players who meet the minimum age requirements. While the state may be responsible for holding the reins of the industry, private businesses are ultimately able to run their own casino sites independently, and competition is fierce, in addition to the industry generating lots of tax revenue for the public purse.

Secondly, a more cautious yet not entirely hostile strategy may be used, as in the case of places like Sweden where a state-owned organization is the wholesale owner of every kind of gambling service, including online casinos. This keeps every activity entirely under the remit of what is effectively a government agency, rather than opening things up to private enterprises.

Finally, countries such as China impose blanket bans on online casinos, meaning that it is effectively illegal for residents to play on these sites, in addition to it being against the law for operators to establish themselves domestically.

Changing attitudes

In amongst all this, it is worth noting that there is a fourth category of country emerging at the moment, typically represented by a softening of attitudes to online casinos. The US is a perfect example of this, as in the past decade it has loosened the limitations on gambling in general and on web-based wagering services in particular.

Of course America is also subject to differences in regulations from state to state, so while online casinos are entirely legal and legitimate in New Jersey and Nevada, they are outlawed in places like Iowa and Oregon.

Even so, it does seem like the legalization and regulation of online casinos has something of a domino effect, as in the US the calls to spread this type of service to more parts of the country are gaining momentum, especially as regulators begin to see just how much tax revenue can be generated by these businesses.

Cultural clashes

As you might expect, the main reason that there are differences in terms of the way that online casinos are regulated around the world is the cultural regard in which gambling is held in a given nation.

The places where gambling is seen as acceptable, or has been a legitimate and legal part of the country’s economic and societal landscape for a long period, tend to also be those where online casinos have been welcomed with open arms.

Of course opinions can change and it seems that plenty of places are warming to the prospect of the uplift that the online casino industry can bring when it is legalized and regulated. Keeping an eye on how efforts to bring it to more parts of the US are progressing is therefore sensible.
