Career, Family or Love: Which Should You Prioritize After Your Divorce?

A divorce can leave you confused and make you question what steps to take next. But it’s prime time to focus on other aspects of your life.

Everyday activities that you didn’t consider significant before your divorce, might now be a top priority. You might use the divorce as a reason to make substantial changes to your life, such as moving house, finding a new partner, or changing career paths.

Juggling your priorities during a divorce can be challenging, so speaking to others – whether that’s friends, family, or divorce lawyers – can often help. Take time to figure out your next steps and evaluate all aspects of your life before you move forward.

In this article, we’ll discuss how to prioritize the key aspects of your personal and work life, to help you come to terms with where your life is taking you. Read on to find out more…

How Can You Prioritize Your Family After a Divorce?

If you have children with your ex-spouse, it’s likely that they will feel like their world is falling apart, especially when it comes to the involvement of custody lawyers. They will need your support whilst they try to understand why their parents are no longer married or together. It might come as a hard adjustment to them; even if you’ve already moved on from the situation, they will need time.

If you choose to prioritize your family, there are several things that you can do to help them through the divorce process. Here’s how:

Reassure Them

Some children believe that they are the reason for their parent’s divorce, or worse, they worry that because their parents don’t love each other anymore, that they won’t be loved either. Let them know it isn’t their fault. Tell them that you love them, and that feeling won’t ever go away.

Explain The Reason Why

It’s common to want to hold information back from your children to avoid hurting them, but this can sometimes do more harm than good. Instead, try explaining the situation and the reasons for the divorce to your children to help them come to terms with things.

Arrange a Fair Co-parenting Schedule with Your Ex-spouse

By the time your divorce is finalized, custody will have been determined for your children. This isn’t a time to put your needs first; your children need to come first. They need to be able to see both of their parents, and it would be unfair for you to prevent that. It might be that you have them for half the week, and your spouse has them for the other half.

How Can You Prioritize Your Career After a Divorce?

The finalizing of your divorce might be an exciting step in your life, especially if you had put your career on hold because of your marriage. Whether it’s finding a new job that you have always wanted to do or increasing your working hours to full-time, try to fully focus on your career needs.

On the other hand, a divorce might complicate matters in your career, especially if you have young children. If you’re a single parent and have full-time custody, you may find that you don’t have as much time for your career as you previously did. However, if you do have the ability to make your career your sole priority, these are some of the things you can do:

Talk to Your Management

If you are already employed, sit down with your manager, and discuss what you would like your next steps to be. It might be that you want to progress through the business, or you are interested in more training opportunities.

Go Back to Education

If you have an idea in mind about what career you want to pursue, but you need certain qualifications to do so, then consider applying for higher education to refresh your CV.

Apply to Jobs

If you didn’t have a job whilst married, it’s the perfect time for you to get job hunting if your career is the top of your agenda. You can use websites such as LinkedIn and Indeed to find the job you’re looking for.

How Can You Prioritize Your Love Life After a Divorce?

Love might be the last thing on your mind after your divorce, or you might be keen to start afresh with someone new. Often people spend many unhappy years in their marriage before ending it so, it’s not uncommon to want to find a partner that they connect with and create a future with.

Go on Dating Apps

If you are interested in entering the dating world again, it might be worth signing up for dating apps such as as Tinder or Bumble. There are no commitments with dating apps. You have complete autonomy over who you want to get to know; the apps don’t put any unnecessary pressure on you.

Figure Out What You Want from a Relationship

Once you’ve had the time to grieve the end of your marriage, you might start thinking about what you want next in a relationship. It might be that you and your ex-spouse never had children, and that’s what you want next. One thing is for sure; you’re likely to know exactly what traits you do and don’t want in a person after your previous relationship.

Career, Family or Love – Which One Is Your Priority?

If none of these call out to you as being your main priority after your divorce, then maybe your priorities lie elsewhere. It could be that you want to focus on self-love, want to take the time to explore the world, or perhaps you want to learn a new talent.

Whatever your calling may be, be sure to follow it as it’ll help to make the divorce easier for you.
