Leveraging Education Technology to Create Innovative Learning Solutions

Educational Technology (EdTech) startup Silicon Valley Learning Lab (SVLL) offers a range of tools and services designed to support students in their academic journeys. The two flagship platforms focus on pursuing law school with LSAT Reader, an advanced LSAT preparation platform, and JD Insider, an admissions consulting service. They combine to include personalized tutoring, application guidance, and strategic advice to help students excel in their law school application process.

According to Investopedia, EdTech “refers to hardware and software designed to enhance teacher-led learning in classrooms and improve students’ education outcomes.”

Because it can be customized to a student’s learning style, individual level, and pace of learning – in addition to being visual and interactive – it shows great promise for revolutionizing education.

Khalouk Shahbander, founder and CEO of SVLL, is the creator of LSAT Reader and a JD Insider. His desire to create impactful and effective learning solutions led him to create the global company based in San Francisco.

“I saw a gap in the market for comprehensive and innovative law-school preparation tools,” he says. “I wanted to build a company that not only filled that gap but also set new standards for excellence and accessibility in the industry. The concept emerged from my experience in the education system and was highly influenced by growing up in a first-generation immigrant household. Both experiences gave me insight into the challenges and opportunities students have. Whether it’s finding alternative forms of education – online education, special education, or education to accommodate students from different cultural or linguistic backgrounds – I identified significant gaps in accessibility and personalized learning. I wanted to create tools that would bridge those gaps.”

The concept that people process information in different ways is much more recognized now than it was even 20 years ago. There are all types of learners, including visual, auditory, and spatial. Students learning geometry today can use a tablet to conceptualize shapes and angles with animated, 3D examples that are far superior to one-dimensional diagrams in the textbooks that have been used for decades.

“SVLL is a tech innovation hub focusing on creating transformative learning experiences,” says Shahbander. “The ultimate goal is to increase access to high-quality personalized learning using technology. So, if an individual retains information better visually and can benefit from virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) interactivity, we want to provide access to that. Sometimes the challenge may be someone with a unique story and goals who needs a little help identifying their strengths and weaknesses and translating that into college admissions essays.”

The initiatives SVLL has been focused on for launch include the first two platforms – LSAT Reader and JD Insider – to provide an end-to-end solution for students navigating the law school admissions process. They’re also working on a concept to help streamline the financial aid process with additional offerings in the pipeline, including eventually branching out to corporate education. Keeping a focus on where students are mentally is also a priority.

“One of the ways that we’re personalizing learning is to help students identify any strengths or weaknesses that they have in terms of their story and how they can best tell their story across different application materials,” Shahbander says. “We also focus on the learner’s psychology and consider the cognitive load while someone’s learning. Good education meets learners where they’re at and listens carefully and understands the challenges the students are experiencing. We help bridge those gaps by leveraging advancements in technology. This is what differentiates us.”

Like any startup, SVLL has faced challenges such as building brand awareness, securing funding, and refining its product offerings. Shahbander credits perseverance, innovation, and a commitment to the mission with helping them navigate these. Strong partnerships and building a dedicated team have also helped them through the growing pains.

“The funds raised from investors will be used to expand our product offerings, enhance our operational infrastructure, and scale our marketing efforts,” he says. “Specifically, we plan to invest in technology development, hire additional team members, and increase our outreach to potential students and partners. This funding will enable us to accelerate our growth and achieve our vision of transforming education.’

Right now, the priority is developing relationships with universities nationwide and working to understand their biggest challenges,” he says. “Some may need help with curriculum development, design, faculty training, etc. Interested academic institutions can reach out through the website or email to discuss their needs and find out how SVLL can collaborate with them to resolve any challenges. Though academia is the first outreach area, Shahbander welcomes engagement with corporate partners as well.

“Quality and effectiveness are at the core of everything we do at SVLL,” he says. “We achieve this by continuously researching and incorporating the latest educational techniques and technology into our programs. Our team of experts rigorously tests and refines our materials to ensure they meet the highest standards. Additionally, we gather feedback from our students and continuously improve our offerings based on their experiences and outcomes.”

The future of education is increasingly digital and personalized with a trend towards more flexible and adaptive learning environments that cater to students’ individual needs. SVLL is at the forefront of this shift, providing innovative and customized educational solutions.
