Leading American, Israeli cancer scientists, medical doctors to share key research highlights at City of Hope/Israel Cancer Research Fund symposium

The Jacki and Bruce Barron Cancer Research Scholars’ Program Symposium will feature Nobel Laureate Avram Hershko.

From the California Business Journal newswires.

American and Israeli cancer scientists and physicians will meet at City of Hope on Friday, Nov. 10, to share the latest developments in collaborative research projects as part of the inaugural Jacki and Bruce Barron Cancer Research Scholars’ Program Symposium.

The program, a between City of Hope and the Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF), supports groundbreaking research between exceptional cancer researchers in the United States and Israel.

“The Jacki and Bruce Barron Cancer Research Scholars’ Program brings together American and Israeli scientists and physicians who have dedicated their lives to finding better cancer cures,” said Steven T. Rosen, M.D., City of Hope’s provost and chief scientific officer and the Irell & Manella Cancer Center Director’s Distinguished Chair. “City of Hope and ICRF share a deep commitment to laboratory research that will ultimately reach patients who desperately need better treatment options.”

Rob Densen, president of the Israel Cancer Research Fund, added: “We believe we are in the midst of a watershed era for cancer cures and treatments and the between City of Hope and ICRF scientists has the potential to yield breakthrough research while also exposing the outstanding work that is being conducted by Israel’s scientists at all the major institutions in Israel. This special enables Israeli researchers to be internationally competitive in a community of the most innovative and leading-edge cancer scientists.”

Highlighting the event will be a presentation by Avram Hershko, M.D., Ph.D., who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2004 along with Israel scientist Aaron Ciechanover, M.D., Ph.D., and late American scientist Irwin Rose, Ph.D. Hershko’s research enabled researchers to understand how destroy unwanted proteins, which otherwise accumulate in cancerous cells. Multiple myeloma, cervical cancer and cystic fibrosis are examples of diseases that can be treated with targeted therapies resulting from the Nobel Prize winning discovery.

At the City of Hope/ICRF symposium, which takes place in the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for Cancer Immunotherapeutics & Tumor Immunology’s Argyros Auditorium, Hershko will discuss “Involvement of the Ubiquitin System in Cancer” at 8:25 a.m.

Other highlights include:

  • Developing Novel Therapeutic Approaches for High Risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), 9:15 a.m.

The panelists are Marcin Kortylewski, Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Immuno-Oncology, at City of Hope, and Shai Izraeli, M.D., head of research and development at Edmond and Lily Safra ’s Hospital, Sheba Medical Center.

  • The Intersection of Glucose Signaling, Metabolism and Breast Cancer, 9:50 a.m.

The panelists are Victoria Seewaldt, M.D., Ruth Ziegler Chair in Population Sciences, and professor and chair, Department of Population Sciences at City of Hope, and Rami Aqeilan, Ph.D., chairman, Division of Cell Biology, Immunology and Cancer Research at Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School.

  • Characterization of the Lung Cancer Microbiome and Its Effects on Response to Treatment, 10:40 a.m.

The panelists are Dan Raz, M.D., assistant professor, Division of Thoracic Surgery at City of Hope, and Ravid Straussman, M.D., Ph.D., senior scientist with the Weizmann Institute of Science.

The Jacki and Bruce Barron Cancer Research Scholars’ Program was made possible with a $5 million gift from The Harvey L. Miller Family Foundation in March 2016. The program is named in honor of Jacki and Bruce Barron, Chicago philanthropists who are City of Hope and ICRF supporters.

The international awards grants to City of Hope and Israeli scientists to support basic, translational and clinical research; provides promising, young Israeli scientists with postdoctoral training at City of Hope in California; offers sabbaticals for distinguished mid-career and senior-level City of Hope scientists in Israel and Israeli scientists at City of Hope; and organizes the annual symposium for researchers from the United States and Israel to share research discoveries.
