How to Move Forward in the Corporate Rat Race

As per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employed workforce in the U.S. is 158.47 million. For those new to corporate life, the path forward can seem daunting. But it doesn’t have to be. It’s all about knowing where you are and where you want to be.

Here are some steps that’ll get you moving toward any goal in your career:

Be Open to Opportunities, Promotion, or Not

Be open to opportunities, promotion, or not. You may be very happy in your current role, but if you get an offer from another company that’s more interesting, take a look at it. As per Zippia, 65% of Americans report being happy with their jobs, but only 42% report satisfaction in their private jobs.

There are many reasons why you might not get a promotion this time around. Your boss’ politics could be playing against you, or there may simply not be any vacancies available.

And while these things can be disappointing, they don’t mean that leaving is the only solution. If something better comes along and fits with your career plans, then it’s worth considering whether now is the right time to make a move.

You may find that working somewhere else gives you skills or experience which will help improve your chances of getting promoted again at some point down the line or even help you land a job in another industry altogether.

Do an Online MBA

Online MBA programs have been proven to be a great way to gain the skills you need to move up in your company. They are convenient and affordable, as well as essential qualifications for management positions.

There are many advantages of doing an online MBA AACSB-accredited program, including advancing your skills and cultivating specialized knowledge. In an online program, you can study at your own pace while working full-time or on nights and weekends if that’s what works best for you.

Online courses also allow students to work with tutors one-on-one when they need additional help or guidance through an assignment or project. Something that isn’t possible in traditional classrooms where students are often paired up with other classmates who may not share their interests or learning style.

Make Friends at Work

After you’ve been in your job for a while, it can be tempting to focus on the work and not worry about making friends. But this is not a good strategy for moving forward in life or even your career. You need to learn how to make friends and keep them if you want to be successful.

A good way to start getting friendly with people is by offering help when it’s needed and without being asked. This shows that you’re willing to go above and beyond what’s expected of you. A trait that many bosses value highly.

It also gives them insight into your personality beyond what they already know from working together. Showing yourself as someone who cares about others will make other colleagues more likely to come over when they have questions or concerns, which means they’ll open up more than they otherwise would have done if they didn’t trust each other enough yet.

Read Books, Magazines, Articles, and Blogs

Reading is one of the best ways to grow, and it’s also a great way to learn about other industries and cultures. The more you read, the more opportunities will come your way for new experiences and increased exposure.
If you want to move up in your career, don’t just limit yourself to reading books that are relevant to your field. Instead, select titles that will help you improve your skillsets so that when job openings come up, they’ll see that you have what it takes to step in and fill them quickly.

Find Mentors

Every company has its own culture, so it’s important to find mentors who are going to be a good fit for you. If you’re at a small startup and they’re all wearing sneakers and jeans, an older guy in a suit might not be the best mentor for you, even if he is brilliant.

Mentors can help guide your career development by giving advice, providing guidance and support, introducing you to other influential people in the industry, or helping get your name out there when opportunities arise. They can help give structure to what may feel like an unstructured process of finding new jobs on LinkedIn or applying for positions online.

As per Zippia, 70% of jobs are never posted, and 85% of jobs are found through networking. Also, 79% of Americans say that networking plays a vital role in their career.

Learn About Different Aspects of Your Company’s Business

Learning about different aspects of your company’s business and operations will help you become more valuable when you are promoted. When you learn more, you’ll be able to contribute even more.

Here are some things we recommend learning:

  • Learn about different departments within your company so that you’ll know how they work together to run the business, who reports to whom, what each department does, etc.
  • Learn about the products or services that those departments provide so that you can have an understanding of the core product offering and how it fits into the overall business strategy. You can also learn about any new products or services being considered by your organization.
Conclusion

Corporate life can be challenging and stressful. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or underwhelmed by your job, but there are ways to manage your emotions and keep moving forward.

If you find yourself stuck in a rut, try looking at things differently or reaching out for help from others who have been there too. With these tips in mind, you will be able to stay motivated throughout your career.
