Suffering from headaches can really put a dampener on your day at the best of times. Finding some ways to reduce the likelihood of headaches occurring in the first place can be a far better idea than simply waiting for them to crop up and then attempting to manage the resulting symptoms.
Wear Glasses
Eye problems affect a number of people across the world. Many have found that, as they learn how to overcome astigmatism for example, wearing their prescribed glasses or contact lenses can really make a big difference. Not only will you be allowing yourself to see better, without the blurred or double vision that can occur as part of this eye problem, but you may also be reducing the likelihood of a headache spoiling your day. These can be caused by persistent eye strain, especially if you have to really try to focus on a screen or the work in front of you. As a general rule, you should wear your glasses when the optician has advised you to, including under any safety eyewear that is required for you to undertake your role.
Have a Break
When your job involves long periods of time using a computer, tablet, or even smartphone, this can put a lot of strain on the eyes. While you can help to reduce this by making sure you have correct posture, the screen is at the correct height to prevent craning, and even adjusting the colors so there is less glare, having breaks from the screen can also be imperative. One such method is to use the 20/20/20 rule. This means that, for every 20 minutes you spend working with a screen, you should spend at least 20 seconds looking at something about 20 feet away. This can help to readjust your eyes, preventing strain and, therefore, headaches.
Stay Hydrated
Another common cause of headaches in the workplace can be due to dehydration, where you have not had enough fluids throughout the day. It is important that, over the span of the day, you aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water, or more in overly hot weather. Dehydration not only causes headaches, but also fatigue, nausea, dizziness, and even fainting. Swapping out some of your favorite hot beverages in favour of glasses of water can really help to prevent these symptoms from occurring in the first place.
Your health is incredibly valuable, so you should strive to look after your body both in and out of work. Headaches can last for a prolonged period of time, and even potentially be dangerous, such as when operating machinery or driving. Finding ways to prevent headaches, and speaking to a physician if they are a common occurrence, can help you to take back control of your day.
