5 Things to Do After a Car Crash

3M+ people are injured in car accidents every year in the U.S. and most have no idea what to do first.

Did you know that more than three million people in the U.S. are injured in car accidents every year?

Ask anyone: experiencing a car crash can be scary, and in the confusion and panic afterward, people don’t always do the right thing.

There are critical steps to take after a car accident that will help provide you some protection in the long term. There are outstanding person injury firms in every city in the nation. In Georgia, for instance, your best move right off the bat is contacting Millar Law Firm. The firm is an expert in personal injury since 1993 under the direction of Bruce Millar. His team of lawyers “work tirelessly to advocate for a client’s rights, finances, and interests,” he says. “Right after sustaining any car accident injuries, you must get the process started so you can get the justice and compensation you deserve.”

1. Seek Medical Attention Right Away if Anyone Has Been Injured

The first thing to do immediately after a car crash is to seek medical attention for anyone who is injured. The number one priority should always be safety. Call 911 right away and don’t leave the scene of the accident. If someone is seriously injured, don’t attempt to move them. If you’re seriously injured, don’t move and wait for first responders to arrive.

2. Move to Safety

The second thing to do is ensure that everybody is safe. If the accident is in a major roadway, it’s important to ensure that you and any other people in the accident are safe. Move to the side of the road, and move any vehicles over to the side if it was a minor accident. If it was a major accident, leave the cars where they are and move everybody to safety.

3. Call the Police

Even if the accident is minor, the police should be called. Getting an accident report from the police is invaluable and can help make the claim with the insurance company easier. If it is safe to do so, take pictures of the accident scene for the insurance company and police. However, the police usually take their own photos if the accident is serious enough.

4. Exchange Information with the Other Driver

The next step is to exchange information with the other parties who were in the accident. Collect the other party’s name, insurance information, license plate number, policy number, write down the accident location, etc. If there are any eyewitnesses, ask for their name and number in case they need to be contacted at a later date.

5. Call a Lawyer

One of the most important steps is to call a lawyer. One thing to NEVER do in the event of a car accident is admitting to the other party or the police (or sign any documents) that it was your fault. The only documents that should ever be signed are a statement for the police or something from the insurance company. However, a lawyer will help with all of these things. Once they’re hired, you can feel peace of mind that you now have a legal advocate and an expert on your side that will help you get the compensation you deserve.

Nobody ever sets out in their vehicle thinking that they’ll get into a car accident, but the fact is that they happen every day. If you’ve been in a car accident, the most important thing to do is seek medical attention for everybody involved. After everybody is safe, it’s also important to call a personal lawyer to ensure that you have adequate legal representation.
