Timur Turlov’s Charitable Initiatives: Transforming Kazakhstan with Freedom Holding Corp

Timur Turlov, the founder and CEO of the Almaty-based, NASDAQ-listed Freedom Holding Corp., is known in Kazakhstan, Asia, and internationally not only as a successful businessman and billionaire but also as someone deeply committed to philanthropy. From supporting education, sports, and disaster relief in Kazakhstan to supporting the UN’s goal of combating climate change by addressing the environmental disaster of the Aral Sea, he remains a firm believer in the personal responsibility of those fortunate enough to be in a position to make a lasting impact on the lives of others.

Timur Turlov believes that education is the key to national prosperity. He has provided opportunities for over 800 students from rural areas across Kazakhstan, giving them access to quality education and a chance to contribute to the country’s growth, by supporting the IQanat High School in Burabay, located in the Akmola region.

The founder of Freedom Holding Corp. Timur Turlov believes that people should not be shy or silent about charity projects, as they can inspire others. While Timur Turlov has built a new campus for IQanat, some 155 prominent businessmen support the school through the IQanat Educational Foundation, initiated by Aidyn Rakhimbayev.

Turlov’s other passion is sports, and Freedom Holding Corp. has supported various sports initiatives, particularly in football and chess.

“We have two major sports focuses: youth football and chess,” says Timur Turlov. “I believe that there is no reason why our athletes should not showcase the world’s greatest game and win world championships! These are two sports in which strategy, clarity of mind, and good physical form decide everything.”

Timur Turlov emphasizes the importance of targeted support, especially for young athletes: “We build targeted support. We find ‘star players’, provide financial support, help with tournament expenses, coaching fees, and counseling. When these young athletes start traveling and competing against the strongest opponents, they grow wings. They realize that anything is possible.”

Building local and international partnerships is part of Turlov’s strategy. “We build close relationships with international federations and learn from them,” he says. “This gives us the opportunity to understand the best international practices, be inspired by ideas, and exchange experiences. We can win additional quotas for our athletes and get a better feel for the opportunities and trends emerging in the world.”

Turlov’s vision transcends borders to create global significance. Freedom Holding has worked with a wide range of stakeholders—including state and local governments, as well as global brands like Snickers, Red Bull, and Mastercard. The holding’s CEO is confident that not only individual athletes but the entire sports ecosystem in Kazakhstan will benefit from the synergies created.

In addition to actively supporting education and sports, Timur Turlov and his holding are also deeply committed to humanitarian causes. When natural disasters strike, successful businesses should be there to help those affected. Freedom Holding did not hesitate to pledge KZT 1 billion ($2 million) to help the victims of this spring’s floods in Kazakhstan.

“These days have become a real test for many regions. Unfortunately, sometimes we are powerless against the elements, but it is within our power to unite and help those who really need it in difficult moments,” Timur Turlov said on his Instagram page.

Turlov’s philanthropic philosophy is based on his personal mission to improve his homeland. “Our social projects are my attempt to make my home, my country, more beautiful. Not just to enjoy life in Europe or North America, but to make my own home cozy and comfortable,” says Turlov.

In an increasingly globalized world, Turlov is keen to highlight the crucial role of the private sector in social and economic development. When entrepreneurs and businesses use their resources and influence, they can impact both their own countries and the international community.
