Startling statistic: When entertainer Danny Thomas founded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 1962, childhood cancer was considered largely incurable.
Since then, St. Jude has helped push the overall survival rate from 20% to more than 80%, and it won’t stop its quest until no child dies from cancer.
Even more amazing, families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — so they can focus on helping their child live.
In an effort to help combat childhood cancer, the nine California offices of Safeguard Investment Advisory Group will host its first ever “Tee Up 4 St. Jude” fundraising golf tournament from 8 am to 5 pm Monday, June 9, 2025 at the Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta, CA.
“The tournament will consist of heartfelt mission moments, energized fundraising, iconic golf and an exciting awards ceremony,” says Safeguard Investment managing partner Reid Abedeen.
Golfers of all skill levels are invited to join Safeguard Investment in making a difference, with all proceeds going directly to support vital research and treatment at St. Jude.
“My wife Smyrna and I have been dedicated supporters of St. Jude for over two decades, so this cause is particularly important to us,” says Abedeen.
The donation to golf is $375 and sponsorships are available ranging from $7,500 to $500.
“Your involvement would not only help raise critical funds for a world-class cause but also position your brand as a champion of hope in the community,” says Abedeen. “We would be happy to talk through any questions or explore if a level of sponsorship that might be a good fit for you.”
The origin story of St. Jude is also incredible. More than 70 years ago, Danny Thomas, then a struggling young entertainer with a baby on the way, visited a Detroit church and was so moved during Mass, he placed his last $7 in the collection box.
When he realized what he’d done, Danny Thomas prayed for a way to pay his looming hospital bills.
Work wasn’t easy to come by, and his despair grew. He turned to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes. He vowed: “Show me my way in life, and I will build you a shrine.”
The next day, he was offered a small part that would pay ten times the amount he’d given to the church. Danny Thomas. had experienced the power of prayer.
That prayer marked a pivotal moment. Soon after, he began finding work, eventually becoming one of the biggest stars of radio, film and television in his day. He starred in the hit TV show Make Room for Daddy, later known as The Danny Thomas Show.
Danny Thomas used his fame to fulfill his vow, and, in 1962, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee opened, changing the lives of thousands of children and their families. St. Jude is not a Catholic hospital and is not affiliated with any religious group.
The award-winning actor Marlo Thomas, the daughter and eldest child of the late Danny Thomas, continues to lead the quest. She proudly serves as National Outreach Director for St. Jude. She is the driving force behind countless fundraising and awareness efforts to educate the public about the lifesaving research and treatment being done every day at St. Jude.
