When two of his students were attacked on the way to a Shabbat dinner at the University of Pittsburgh, Rabbi Shmuli Rothstein rushed to their side.
Less than a month later, another student had been attacked on campus while wearing a Star of David necklace, also at the University of Pittsburgh .
“It’s unfortunate that this is the reality for Jewish students, but their resilience continues to inspire us, and we will continue supporting them in every way we can,” Rothstein says .
This weekend, Rothstein will travel to Crown Heights with a group of students to participate in Pegisha, the largest annual Jewish student gathering arranged by Chabad on Campus International . Approximately 2000 students from 176 universities are projected to attend.
Despite rising antisemitism, Chabad Houses on college campuses all over America are experiencing a surge in participation, with students yearning to connect more than ever.
Organizers initially planned to cap the event at 1200 participants, but record levels of interest pushed them to expand, enlisting additional staff and venue space.
“In this critical moment, we could not turn away a single student,” Chabad on Campus International COO Rabbi Avi Weinstein said. The program will run from November 15–17, doubling the number of participants from previous years.
Students will enjoy an immersive traditional Shabbat experience with the predominantly Chabad Orthodox community in Crown Heights, including traditional Shabbat meals in the homes of welcoming families.
Various workshops and speakers are also planned. The program will also offer a break from some of the tension experienced by students and their leaders since Oct 7, 2023.
On Saturday night, all 2000 students from 176 universities will come together for a remarkable Havdallah ceremony marking Jewish pride and unity.
Havdallah is the ceremony that farewells the end of the Jewish Sabbath, featuring a short prayer, song, and dance.
