Keeping the Flame Alive in Your Long-Distance Relationship

Living far away from your partner is an extremely tough thing to navigate. You might feel lonely, it can put strain on your relationship, and it can even affect your individual mental health and daily life.

One of the biggest challenges long-distance partners face is maintaining those feelings of connection and infatuation without any physical contact or quality time together. However, even though it might be hard, this isn’t impossible to do! Here are four important ways to maintain and nourish your relationship, no matter the distance.

Sweet Gestures

First of all, both of you should be invested in putting in the effort to make the other feel special, and let them know you’re thinking of them (out of sight does NOT mean out of mind). Even though you don’t live in the same neighbourhood, there are still ways you can surprise them.

Having flowers delivered or sending specially curated care packages is a great way to do this. You can fill them with things you know your partner wants or needs, handwritten letters, an item of your clothing (that smells like you), and some of the treats you know they love. You can use a local delivery service like courierschicago.com for same-day or overnight options if you want to send something freshly baked or you can send them luxurious bouquets from B&M Florist.

Shared Activities

Chatting on the phone or over video call is obviously going to be an important part of your relationship, but it doesn’t have to be all talk! There are loads of online activities you can do together online to share in some “normal couple” activities like movie nights.

Use special streaming services to watch films together, get on a video call to cook and share a meal together (try using the same recipe), play two-player online games, or even read a book together to wind down before you sleep! Spending time together like this instead of just a quick “good night” call will help you connect better and share more of your lives with each other.

Creating a Routine

On the topic of connection, it’s important that you do so regularly. Losing touch with your partner just because you’re having a busy week is an absolute no-no. Regular communication will help you learn skills like navigating arguments, and handling other relationship stressors.

To build connection and security, schedule regular calls, catch ups, dates, visits, etc. and stick to them as far as possible so you don’t start living past one another.

Goal Setting Together

If you’re not the goal-setting type, this might seem silly, but couples goal setting is a crucial part of long-distance relationships. Looking to the future (both far and near) will help you deal with this period of your relationship.

In most LDR cases, the end goal is to no longer be long-distance and reach a point where you can be together in person. Setting clear goals for how and when you will achieve this will make the distance easier to handle when things get tough. Setting shorter goals of in-person visits can be helpful too!
