The wellness market has become saturated with trend diets, detoxes, and supplements, eroding consumer trust with confusion and inconsistency. But Dr. Angela Zeng ventured into it anyway.

She left her stable career in pharmaceutical research and built Karviva on her terms, despite doubts. Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine practices, her brand offers complex formulations that she stands behind, refusing to dilute the product vision for ease or acceptance.

Walking Away From a Conventional Path

Dr. Zeng was born in China and spent her childhood surrounded by Traditional Chinese Medicine, but she walked away from that path in favor of scientific research in the United States. There, she earned an MBA from Washington University, a PhD in pathology from St. Louis University, and a postdoctoral fellowship from Northwestern.

Despite a decorated professional background, Dr. Zeng was not satisfied with the industry. She began to observe a widening gap between the industry’s priority on profits and its claimed priority for patients.

Out of this disillusionment, Dr. Zeng chose to build products to support health, rooted in scientific evidence she studied and the traditional herbal medicine she grew up with. From this, she built Karviva.

Protected the Product, Not Simplifying It

Bringing the vision to life proved more difficult than Dr. Zeng had anticipated. Co-packers refused to work with her and Karviva because the formulations were too complex and unique for the standard templates that manufacturers prefer. If she had simplified her formula, some offered to work with her, but Dr. Zeng turned them down to stay true to her mission.

In St. Louis, she built her own factory and began producing her own product after making a significant financial commitment and enduring operational struggles. Dr. Zeng had no venture capital backing, but unlike many founders, she had complete control of her company.

Growth Came Through Direct Consumer Trust

Karviva launched in 2017, but its distribution took off slowly. Dr. Zeng convinced her local Whole Foods manager to let her sample directly to shoppers. She used this to drive awareness, and Amazon picked up Karviva products, leading to the expansion of retail relationships across the state. Dr. Zeng not only built her company and its formulations in a very hands-on manner, but also grew its marketing and distribution.

Recognition Despite Disbelief

Dr. Zeng is a woman founder in a scientific field, a woman of color, and an immigrant, and is outspoken about her experience in an industry where people like her receive disproportionately small capital investment and retail buyer recognition, even as they control access to customer shelves.

Despite the challenges she has faced, Dr. Zeng has grown Karviva and been recognized for this achievement. In 2020, she was featured by the St. Louis Business Journal as a Diverse Business Leader.

In 2025, Zeng was named to the USA Today Top 10 Women Leaders to Watch and won the World Beverage Innovation Award for Best Low/No Alcohol Beverage at Drinktec Munich.

A Broader Shift in Wellness

Dr. Angela Zeng’s development of Karviva products and their popularity mark a developing shift in wellness as the saturated market shakes off trends and fads.

It also speaks to a growing interest in the US market for Traditional Chinese Medicine and for traditional wellness grounded in science. With determination and consistency, Zeng built a strong product backed by her ideals and mission.
