From the Business Journal newswire

For the 15th year in a row, U.C. Berkeley held onto the No. 1 spot in U.S. News & World Report’s list of top public universities, which was released today.

Princeton remained the top in the country and Harvard No. 2, while here in California, Stanford slipped from last year’s No. 4 spot to No. 5.

In the list of top public schools, the system led the way with Berkeley first, Los Angeles second, Santa Barbara eighth, Irvine ninth, and San Diego and Davis tying for No. 10.

While the annual release includes multiple lists looking at everything from value schools to A+ schools for B students, the backbone of the effort is a ranking of national universities with more than 1,800 U.S.-based schools (both private and public).

The are based on everything from graduation rate and class size to expert opinion and student excellence.
