7 Cost-Cutting Tips for Your Next Move

In your pursuit to save as much money as possible, don’t make foolish mistakes. Don’t just book the cheapest moving service you find.

Moving can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. With some effort and ingenuity, you can shave off a considerable amount from your total expenses. We’ve compiled a list of tips guaranteed to save you some money for your next move.

1. Do it yourself (or get some friends to help)

This is the most obvious solution if you want to dodge an expensive moving bill. Most friends be amenable to helping you move especially if your destination isn’t too far. If you or your friend has a pickup truck, apply a truck bed liner to avoid damages caused by heavy furniture and boxes. Be considerate and offer them compensation for their help, like paying for their gas.

2. Be creative with packing materials

Instead of spending money on a roll of bubble wrap, use clothes, pillows, and towels to protect fragile items during the move. You can also reuse bubble wrap or packing peanuts from online purchases. If you were planning to throw your couch away, take out the foam and use it to protect fragile items.

3. Don’t pay for boxes

If you know you’re about to move, start collecting boxes from your and supermarket trips. You could also ask friends to set aside boxes for you. There are also places and websites you can get boxes for free. It may be a challenge finding boxes that are in good condition or the perfect size, but it be cheaper and more eco-friendly than buying brand new boxes.

4. Clean yourself

You may need to clean your house in preparation for the next tenants. Instead of hiring a cleaning service, bite the bullet and do it yourself.

5. Have a garage sale

Most moving companies charge you based on how much stuff needs to be moved, so ask yourself if it will be cheaper to bring all this stuff with you or buy new ones when you get to your destination. If you decide to leave some items behind, try selling them instead of throwing them away.

6. Canvass rates thoroughly

Check all the moving companies in your area to determine who can give you the best deal. Some moving companies even have special sales or promos, so keep an eye out.

7. Avoid the peak season

May to December is the most popular period for moving, so moving companies tend to charge more. If you have the option, schedule your move around January to April. Not only you get a slight discount, but you’ll also find it easier to schedule a move since you won’t be competing with as many people.

In your pursuit to save as much money as possible, don’t make foolish mistakes. Don’t just book the cheapest moving service you find. Research and read reviews. Provide adequate protection for expensive items like game consoles or computers so they don’t get damaged in the move. Spending a few extra dollars may be worth it if it means less stress down the line.
