5 Ways to Make Your Home More Energy-Efficient

The way we live and how we take care of our homes has changed and evolved over the years. Today, homeowners are looking for tangible solutions to rising energy costs and changing environmental factors. The importance of improving daily energy usage and reducing energy costs is now more important than ever.

Energy efficiency is an essential component of how we live and function in our homes. Not only does engaging in this practice save electricity, but it also helps reduce environmental impacts and has many health benefits. Making your home a more energy-efficient place to live can start with these simple steps and resources.

Take Advantage of Off-Peak Rates

When you run your dishwasher or laundry is just as important as how often you run them. In most cities, running your appliances in the middle of the day means you’re using energy during peak hours, and your rates are going to be significantly higher than in the evenings and on the weekend.

Instead, take advantage of those off-peak rates and run your appliances, or schedule them to run if you’re not home during those evening and weekend hours — a simple and effective way to become more energy efficient in your weekly routine.

Natural Cooling Systems

During those warm summer months, it can be tempting to automatically turn on your air conditioning without a second thought. The reality is that your cooling system runs on a good amount of energy, and cutting back on this usage can significantly help your energy consumption and monthly costs.

If you have windows that open, take advantage of those breezy summer days. Install more ceiling fans in your home, which lets the cool air circulate without consuming more energy.

Test Your Doors and Windows

Any cracks or damages to your windows and doors can change the way your home functions. When heat is able to escape your home, or you feel drafts coming from outdoors, this can put your heating and cooling systems into overdrive — driving up energy usage and costs.

The experts at Golden Windows recommend checking all windows and door frames for any gaps, cracks, or damages that could be contributing to these issues. By re-sealing or installing new windows and doors, you can rest easy knowing your home’s temperature is regulated and everyone indoors can feel comfortable.

Maintain Your Furnace

If your home is equipped with a furnace that’s a few years old, there’s a likely chance it’s using unnecessary excess energy. The most effective way to deal with this is through regular maintenance — this may involve calling a professional to reach the features you can’t see to ensure your furnace isn’t working harder than it needs to. From there, it’s important to ensure its filters are replaced every three months — or more frequently if you’ve completed renovations or have a pet in your home.

These steps will ensure your furnace won’t work overtime and uses minimal energy to operate in your home.
