4 Effective Ways to Keep Coyotes Away from Your Property

Are you playing an unintended game of hide and seek with coyotes on your property? If yes, then you’ve stumbled upon the right guide! Coyotes, the clever and adaptable creatures that they are, can sometimes become too close for comfort.

Keeping these clever canines at bay doesn’t have to be hard work. With the right strategies, it can even be an adventure. Whether you’re an experienced farmer, a new homeowner on the edge of town, or a nature lover looking to live in harmony with local wildlife, this guide will offer effective, humane, and fun ways to keep coyotes away!

1. Remove Potential Food Sources

As mentioned earlier, coyotes are opportunistic and will take advantage of any food source they can find. Therefore, it’s important to remove any potential food sources from your property. This includes:

  • Securing trash cans and compost bins with tight-fitting lids.
  • Keeping pet food indoors and not leaving it outside unattended.
  • Picking up fallen fruits and vegetables from your garden.
  • Removing bird feeders, as they can attract small animals that coyotes prey on.

2. Secure Your Property

Another important step in keeping coyotes away is to secure your property. This includes:

  • Installing a property fencing around your property, preferably one that is at least six feet tall and extends underground to prevent digging.
  • Sealing any openings or gaps in existing fences.
  • Closing off any crawl spaces, sheds, or other potential shelters that coyotes could use.
  • Installing a coyote roller guard along the top of fences to prevent coyotes from being able to grip and pull themselves over.

3. Use Deterrents

There are many different deterrents that can be effective in keeping coyotes away from your property. Some options include:

  • Motion-activated lights or sprinklers that startle and scare off coyotes.
  • Noise-making devices such as air horns, radios, or alarms that can be triggered by motion sensors.
  • Using coyote urine or predator scent to create the illusion that a larger animal is in the area.
  • Installing reflective tape or flashing lights to create a visual deterrent.

4. Use Human Presence

As mentioned earlier, coyotes are generally afraid of humans. Therefore, having a human presence can be an effective way to keep them away from your property. Some ways to do this include:

  • Walking your dog around your property frequently, as coyotes are less likely to approach when there is a larger animal present.
  • Making loud noises or using whistles when you see a coyote on your property.
  • Installing motion-activated cameras and checking them regularly to stay aware of any coyote activity.

Embrace Vigilance, Keep Coyotes Away

Remaining vigilant and active in employing these strategies is key to successfully keep coyotes away from your property. By incorporating these steps into your daily routine, you’ll create a safer environment that deters unwelcome visits from clever canines, protecting you and your loved ones.

Keep in mind, that coexistence with wildlife management requires patience, understanding, and a bit of ingenuity. With these tools and techniques, you’re well on your way to enjoying a peaceful, coyote-free living space.
