According to a new study from Ticket-Compare.com, California residents spent an average of $322 per person on concerts, shows, and live events in 2024. With the state's large population, this translated to a staggering $12.7 billion in total spending—the highest dollar amount of any state in the nation.

The findings highlight California's enduring appetite for live experiences even as ticket prices have soared in recent years. The phenomenon, dubbed "funflation," has seen concert tickets increase by 34% compared to 2019 prices as of the third quarter of 2025. Yet Californians continue to prioritize attending live performances, from intimate theater productions to massive stadium concerts.

"Post-pandemic, live events have become a cultural necessity for many Americans," the study notes. This shift in consumer behavior reflects a broader trend of people valuing experiences over material goods, particularly after years of pandemic-related restrictions on gatherings.

California's third-place ranking puts it behind only Virginia and Hawaii in per capita spending, while outpacing entertainment hubs like Massachusetts and Missouri. The state's $322 average spending per resident is nearly 13 times higher than Mississippi, which recorded the nation's lowest per capita spending at just $25.

The study, which analyzed federal data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, Census Bureau, and Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis spanning 2014 to 2024, reveals that live entertainment spending has increased across all 50 states and the District of Columbia over the past decade. However, California's growth has been particularly robust, fueled by the state's concentration of world-class venues, diverse entertainment options, and population willing to invest in memorable experiences.

The Taylor Swift effect has been impossible to ignore in California and beyond. Her record-breaking Eras Tour, which grossed $2 billion across 2023 and 2024, exemplified the willingness of fans to pay premium prices for must-see performances. Multiple California dates on the tour sold out within minutes, with resale tickets commanding prices well into the thousands of dollars.

But it's not just mega-tours driving California's entertainment spending. The state's robust entertainment ecosystem includes everything from Broadway shows in Los Angeles and San Francisco to music festivals like Coachella, comedy clubs in every major city, and countless smaller venues hosting emerging artists. This diversity of options means there's something for every budget and taste, though even mid-tier events have seen significant price increases.

The economic impact extends beyond just ticket sales. Live entertainment generates substantial revenue for California's hospitality, restaurant, and transportation sectors. Concertgoers and theater attendees typically spend money on dining, lodging, parking, and merchandise, creating a multiplier effect that benefits local economies throughout the state.

However, the rising costs have sparked concerns about accessibility. As ticket prices climb, some worry that live entertainment is becoming a luxury reserved for higher-income residents rather than an accessible cultural experience for all Californians. Venue operators and artists face the challenge of balancing profitability with maintaining diverse, inclusive audiences.

Despite these concerns, the data suggests Californians remain committed to attending live events. The state's entertainment industry shows no signs of slowing down, with major tours, festivals, and productions continuing to announce California dates that sell out rapidly.

As funflation continues to reshape the live entertainment landscape, California's position as a top-spending state reflects both its cultural priorities and economic capacity. Whether this trend represents a sustainable new normal or a bubble waiting to burst remains to be seen, but for now, the Golden State's residents are voting with their wallets—and they're saying yes to live experiences, premium prices and all.
