Are you a prospective or new commercial driver looking to pass your CDL test on the first try? If so, this article was written with you in mind.

Although it is your right as a potential commercial motor vehicle operator to fail your DMV’s written examination as many times as you see fit, many drivers choose not to do so.

Relatively few individuals take advantage of failing a total of three CDL exams before being forced out of taking the test for one year.

This article will highlight several key strategies that have been proven effective by past and present testing takers at helping them pass their exam on the first try.

Use a sample test or a CDL drivers handbook

There are many different tools that you can choose from to help ensure your success on your commercial learner’s permit exam. First and foremost, deciding to utilize a practice CDL exam is one of the best ways for would-be truck drivers to gauge their chances of passing before actually taking the real thing. In addition, potential operators who purchase a CDL driving handbook may find that this tool also provides them with all of the information that they need to pass the written examination.

There are several vendors out there who offer both sample exams as well as guidelines for operating a commercial motor vehicle. Some even provide interactive CDL test simulators which serve as viable alternatives for those who do not particularly enjoy taking written tests. If you choose to utilize free CDL practice tests, be sure that you recognize all of the potential question types and topics which may show up on your exam before departing with an incorrect answer and/or time penalty.

Enroll in a CDL training school

Another excellent idea for prospective drivers is to enroll themselves in a full-service commercial driver’s license program. These schools provide enrollment at many different price points and offer instruction for both classroom sessions and the behind-the-wheel experience. In addition, these programs typically include free lifetime assistance from their CDL driving instructors via phone or e-mail if students have any questions about the material that was covered in class or when they are ready to take their DMV’s practical exam. The best part about these programs is that they also provide a full refund if an individual fails to pass his or her DMV written test on their first attempt.

Create a study guide/schedule for yourself

One excellent way to prepare yourself for your exam is by creating a personal CDL test study schedule that can be followed step-by-step to pass the written exam on the first try. When making this study plan it is wise to allow at least 2 weeks to learn all of the information that you will need to score an 80% or better when taking your DMV’s commercial motor vehicle permit test. If you are able, try not to cram everything in all at once which may result in forgetting some key points. Instead, it is best practice to simply take one day off from studying before continuing with more tests and material reviews to allow your brain to rest and digest the information that you have learned.

In addition, it is best to schedule each test session to give yourself a break in between to avoid being overwhelmed with all of the material that must be covered. If you create a personalized study plan for yourself along with a regular testing schedule, you will probably find yourself looking at receiving an 80% or better score when taking your commercial driver’s license permit exam on your very first try.

Review all of the material that you are unsure about

If you find yourself having difficulty with a particular subject on your CDL driving exam, it may be beneficial to schedule additional study sessions or even retake the test later that week or month to ensure that you are not missing any key points that could prevent you from receiving an 80% or better. Be sure to review the material before passing the written exam to avoid potentially wasting valuable time during your real-life behind-the-wheel training. In addition, if there is a specific topic that you find especially challenging, be sure to ask your CDL instructor if they can offer any additional pointers or tips to better prepare yourself for the real thing.

There are many different ways to prepare yourself for your commercial driver’s license exam. By utilizing a free CDL practice test and/or enrolling in a full-service training program, you will be well on your way to passing the written exam on the first try and continuing with additional courses that will allow you to operate a semi-truck, tractor-trailer, or another large commercial vehicle.
