A new study highlighted that California ranks 49th in terms of economic burden from traffic fatalities nationwide.

A new study by Florida-based personal injury law firm Blakeley Law Firm analyzed key cost indicators across U.S. states using three-year (2021–2023) averages. It examined two primary metrics: the Medical Cost Score (direct medical costs associated with fatal crashes) and the Statistical Life Lost Score (the value of statistical life lost from fatalities), using the Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System. These metrics were totaled to rank states from highest to lowest on a 100-point scale, with higher scores indicating greater economic impact from traffic fatalities.

California ranks 49th with a Total Economic Toll score of 46.66/100 – the second lowest nationwide. The Golden State recorded an average medical cost of $316,608,474 and an annual average value of statistical life loss of $313,157,466,667.

“While every fatal crash is a human tragedy, the data shows that in states like California and New Jersey, the financial burden per incident remains lower compared to the rest of the nation.
