A new study reveals that California ranks tenth for congenital syphilis rate in the U.S.
The research by Birth Injury Lawyers Group analyzed congenital syphilis data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) between 2019 and 2023, calculating the five-year average rate per 100,000 live births in each state to identify where newborns are most at risk of exposure to this preventable infection.
California rounds out the top ten states for congenital syphilis, averaging 121 cases per 100,000 live births from 2019 to 2023. This figure is approximately 80.6% higher than the national average of 67 cases per 100,000 live births. The Golden State reported its peak rate in 2022 at 147 cases, while the lowest occurred in 2019 with 99.4 cases.

Methodology
