5 Packing And Sorting Tips When Preparing Your Household Items For A Move

Moving to a new home will require plenty of tasks on your end. Apart from preparing your new home, you still have to think about packing your things, especially if you’re planning to bring a lot of stuff with you. In this case, you need to ensure that you pack and sort them well so you won’t have any problems transporting them to your new home, allowing for an easier move.

While the emotions of moving to a new home might overwhelm you, it shouldn’t hinder you from packing quickly and properly. To ensure a smooth and organized moving experience, listed below are the packing and sorting tips when preparing your household items for a move:

1. Hire A Packing Service

One of the easiest ways you can pack and sort your items is to hire a packing service that’ll do all of the hard work for you. Allowing the professionals to handle the necessary tasks for the move will help you save time and energy. This will work perfectly well if you have an extremely tight schedule, and if you unexpectedly have to move.

As you hire a packing service, check if they have a mover as well. You’ll be able to kill two birds with one stone if the same company can deliver your items to your new home. At Move Central or other similar companies, they offer plenty of moving and packing services that can adjust to your needs. You can always communicate with the business if you need some special arrangement or if you’d like to get a discount.

2. Purchase Enough Materials

Before packing your household items, ensure that you have an adequate supply of packing materials on hand. The last thing you want is to be in the midst of packing only to find out that you’ve run out of packing materials. You should be able to properly pack each item in your belongings to ensure that nothing important is left behind.

You can begin by purchasing plenty of boxes in various sizes to be used as storage for your fragile items that you’ll be bringing with you. You should also buy enough packing tape and dispensers, so you can easily seal the boxes right away. In addition, you should buy a marker that’ll allow you to label each box for easy identification. This will also allow for proper organization of items that should be labeled as fragile.

3. Add A Protective Layer

Bringing glass items with you during your move may be frightening, especially since there’s a risk of breaking them. You should add a protective layer in boxes containing fragile items so that they don’t break when they fall inside a moving truck. While it will cost you a bit more, it’ll help keep your belongings safe.

The selection of which protective layer to use would be entirely up to you. You can use bubble wrap, foam peanuts, packing paper, or honeycomb paper to ensure that they are tightly sealed, and that they don’t become loose inside the boxes. Alternatively, if you’d like to save money, you can always use towels to wrap each item. Just make sure the box is full to prevent things from moving around. To keep items in place, you can also fill the box with clothes or paper.

4. Pack By Room

One of the best ways to achieve organized packing is to start from room to room. If you go around the house looking for similar items to pack together in the hopes of being more productive, you’ll only make it more difficult to unpack and even finish packing on time. To ensure proper organization, pack all items found in one room before moving on to the next.

As you move from one room to another, keep each box separated according to its purpose; this could include grouping your linen, books, display items, and other things. This will make it easier for you to label your boxes and identify them quickly. You should write the name of the bedroom on the box and the main contents inside for better organization. This’ll help you in determining which items should be placed in their respective rooms.

5. Learn To Declutter

As you pack for your household items, take advantage of the opportunity to declutter the items that you don’t need to bring with you. This’ll help in lightening your load and giving your new home a fresh start. As much as possible, remove unnecessary items to allow your space to be breathable.

Decluttering allows you to reduce your possessions and donate old items to charity. However, if you need some extra cash for your next move, you can always sell them online or through a garage sale. This is a great way to earn money quickly, which could be used to pay the moving company.

The Verdict

Some people become emotional whenever they move because they see so many things that hold precious memories. While this is true, don’t forget to pack as efficiently as possible. You should be able to move smoothly and quickly if you have good organizational skills.
