3 Serious Mistakes You’ll Make When Moving Out of State and How to Avoid Them

Before you start reaping the benefits of living in a new state, there’s a mammoth mountain that you need to cross.

Moving to a new state will be one of the most life-changing experiences for you. Meeting new people, exploring new cultures, and sampling new cuisines – it’s a tiny glimpse of the zillion possibilities that an out-of-state relocation brings.

But before you start reaping the benefits of living in a new state, there’s a mammoth mountain that you need to cross. You’ll have to pack all your belongings, and securely transfer them to your new place.

An interstate relocation isn’t as simple as moving a few blocks away from your current living space. Let’s say you’re moving to Los Angeles from New York. You can’t simply throw your belongings into suitcases and stuff them in your car.

You need the help of professional movers who specialize in interstate moves. Also, it requires months of planning to ensure that the transition to your new home is as seamless as possible.

In this blog, we’ll discuss a few common mistakes that people make during interstate relocation. Also, we’ll outline useful ways to avoid these mistakes for a hassle-free move. Let’s get started.

1. Doing It Yourself

When it comes to interstate relocation, you’ve got a few options. You can rent a moving truck or moving pod that’ll transport your belongings to the new state. Alternatively, you can throw all your boxes into a minivan, and drive all the way to your new place.

These options might seem more economical than hiring a professional moving company. You don’t have to pay anyone to pack and unpack your boxes. Nor do you need to pay additional charges for packing materials.

The only problem with the DIY approach is that it involves a lot of hits and misses. Chances are you’re going to end up packing delicate objects without any padding.

Or you might need more boxes than usual because you didn’t pack them efficiently. Also, you’ll struggle to move heavy objects, such as electronic appliances and musical instruments.

Then there’s the chance of unprecedented delays, damages, and lost boxes. All these things will only add to the stress of moving.

The best way of avoiding such situations is to find a professional moving company that has adequate experience in interstate relocation. Instead of hiring a large moving company with several branches, find local movers who are familiar with your area’s roads, traffic, weather, etc.

If you’re moving to Los Angeles from New York, look for a reliable Los Angeles long-distance moving company. They’ll have a clear idea of the challenges that come with an out-of-state relocation to Los Angeles. Also, they’ll help you identify the ideal routes and dates for transportation.

Professional movers are trained to ensure the safety of expensive and fragile objects during relocation. Make sure you check their reviews and customer feedback before hiring them.

2. Not Packing an Essentials Kit

Here’s the thing – even the best Los Angeles long-distance moving companies will take at least a few days to move your belongings from NYC to LA. That’s going to be the case with any out-of-state relocation.

Chances are you’ll reach your new place before all your boxes arrive. The last thing you want is to run around in search of toiletries, snacks, or loungewear right after a long flight.

That’s why it is wiser to pack a separate suitcase with all the essential items you’re going to need at your new place. List everything you’ll need during your first week at the new place.

If you’ve got kids in the family, ask them about any items they’d like to keep with them during the move. They might have a favorite soft toy that they need before going to sleep.

Make sure you pack a first-aid kit, an electric kettle, and disposable cutlery as well.

3. Forgetting to Create a Timeline

It’s the biggest mistake you can make while moving between states. You can’t simply decide to stuff your clothes into a suitcase one fine morning. You must have a clear idea of the steps involved in interstate relocation, and the time required for each step. Otherwise, delays will become inevitable during the move.

If you’ve already hired an interstate moving company, consult them to build a timeline of various things you’ll need to do before you start loading boxes into a moving truck. Assign specific dates to each activity, and make sure you leave enough room for any last-minute contingencies.

Bonus Tip: Stop Freaking Out

A recent survey found that the stress of moving is similar to that of going through a breakup or divorce. The nerves and jitters only amplify when you’re relocating to a new state.

The key is to stay calm, identify the possible challenges you’ll encounter, and create a plan to overcome them. Working with a trusted long-distance moving company will ease the stress, and make your relocation as seamless as possible.
