12 Cases of Tuberculosis Linked to Northern California Casinos

Over the past five years, 11 cases of tuberculosis have been reported at casinos in Northern California. Of those, 10 have been genetically linked to staff or visitors at the California Grand Casino in Pacheco.

Outbreaks of Tuberculosis among Casino Visitors

According to health officials, more than 300 people have already been linked to possible active tuberculosis. At this time, CCH has not identified the exact source of transmission at this Bay Area casino, but they are actively working with the establishment’s management to test and examine all of its staff.

Tuberculosis is one of the major infectious diseases in the world, as estimated by the World Health Organization. Therefore, given the high risk of spread, health officials are urging both employees and visitors to the casino to get tested for the disease.

With new evidence of the spread of tuberculosis among casino visitors between 2018 and 2023, Dr. Meera Srinivasan, deputy health officer of Contra Costa County, expressed the recommendation to get tested for this type of disease even if there are no symptoms. In her statement, she emphasized that tuberculosis can stay in a person’s body for many years before showing characteristic signs.

The doctor also emphasized the importance of early detection of the disease, as tuberculosis is curable with timely diagnosis and competent therapy. However, the agency did not disclose how the first cases of TB were detected at the casino, and officials did not provide additional details.

What Casino Officials are Saying

Casino spokesperson Becky Warren said that the safety of customers and employees is a prevailing priority for their organization. She noted that none of the casino-related incidents today involve their employees, and the only source would be third-party service providers who are sometimes present at the gaming venue.

It was also noted that Contra Costa Health had not identified any ongoing sources of transmission in the casino card room. They are actively working with the county on notifications and testing to ensure public health and safety.
